NTAEE members have consistently been recognized regionally and internationally with AEE awards over the last two decades.  We encourage our local members to apply for Local awards each year.  Winners are later submitted for consideration at the Regional and International award levels.

Awards are accepted year round, but are requested by October 31, 2010 in order to be processed for Local, Regional, and National recognition.  The Awards Committee will announce the award winners in November.  Individuals who wish to submit a nomination or be considered for nomination should contact the 2010 NTAEE Awards Committee Chair, Rusty Hodapp at 972-973-3670, awards@ntaee.org.  Rusty is available to answer questions and provide assistance developing nominations.

2009 Chapter Award Recipients

NTAEE is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009 Chapter Awards.

Energy Professional Development of the Year

Presented for outstanding accomplishments in training and development of energy engineers and managers, and for superior service to the Association.

2009 Recipient:  Jerry R. Dennis, Energy Manager, DFW Airport Board (nominated by Jim Phillips, Vice President – Engineering, Independent Energy Alternatives)

Jerry Dennis is recognized for his service to the North Texas Chapter and local energy professionals by advancing the Chapter’s professional energy professional development mission.  Mr. Dennis has been active as a chapter Board Member and as the 2009 Chapter Vice President and President-Elect, he served as the Programs chair where he was responsible for the educational component of chapter meetings, identifying topics, recruiting speakers and arranging logistics – an important and essential element of the Chapter’s continuous educational services.  In addition, and perhaps most noteworthy among his achievements in this regard, Mr. Dennis has served as the NTAEE CEM Study Group Program Chair for past 3 years.  Under his leadership the Chapter CEM Study Guide was completely updated to reflect the current exam topics and was made paperless.  He revised the entire program to comply with the new and more stringent AEE policy on Chapter CEM study programs.  Mr. Dennis coordinated the program each year, managed logistics, recruited instructors, taught sessions personally and proctored the exam locally.  The most telling measure of his impact on the profession has been the results of the program – during the past 3 years 57 individuals have participated in the program, 32 sat for the exam, 21 passed (65% pass rate) and $11,400 dollars raised for NTAEE scholarships.  These results have far surpassed those of previous Chapter programs and demonstrate the effectiveness of Mr. Dennis’ leadership in Energy Professional Development.

Energy Manager of the Year

Presented for outstanding accomplishments in promoting the practices, principles of energy management and development, and for superior service to the Association.

2009 Recipient:  Rick Hart, Energy Manager, Veterans Affairs North Texas Healthcare System (nominated by Michael McElroy, Director Energy Management Program US Department of Veterans Affairs)

Rick Hart has been serving as Energy Manager at the Dallas VA Medical Center since 2001.  During this time he has been responsible for many innovations that have reduced energy consumption and cost while improving the environment of caring for the veteran. A few examples include:

1.       First medical application of a flywheel based Uninterruptable Power Supply

2.       337 KW Photovoltaic system

3.       Pilot LED lamp retrofit of fluorescent fixtures

4.       Solar water heating for the Dallas Community Living Center

5.       Motion sensing parking lot lights

6.       Continuous Commissioning initiative for all Texas VA facilities using existing infrastructure

7.       Extensive local sub-metering installations for water, gas and electricity

8.       Electrical Demand reduction from 11MW to 9.2MW

9.       Water savings of over 50% through steam condensate capture and return

10.   Sustainability rating through the Green Building Initiative in 2009

11.   Competitive energy procurement that have saved over $1million annually

12.   Energy intensity reduction equal to 9% since 2005 while providing increased services to the veteran

13.   Alternative fuel station – B20 & E85 – to serve government vehicles in North Texas

Mr. Hart has also been a leader within the VA national energy program. His technical experience with health care energy management has been an asset to the Department of Veterans Affairs in developing our program. He serves as the chair of the VA Energy Engineers Advisory Board which coordinates energy education, new technology, and energy information for over 100 of the department’s facility energy engineers. He serves on the Professional Advisory Group which is currently developing an Energy Guidebook for VA energy engineers, authoring three chapters himself.

Mr. Hart is a strong advocate of the VA partnership with the Association of Energy Engineers and has encouraged many of the VA energy engineers to become Certified Energy Managers as a statement of being energy professional.  He has served the North Texas Association of Energy Engineers as a Board member and President in 2008.
